Krstac 958m

Above the Montenegrin Bay of Kotor, a serpentine road rises to the plateau called Krstac. From there, the road climbs considerably further up to 1,700m to two mausoleums on Mount Lovćen. During the ride, the cyclist is accompanied by an impressive view down to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor and cruise ships anchored in front of it. Due to bad weather, this excursion had to end in Krstac, but the further course up to Lovćen must be impressive with its total of 1,700 metres in altitude.

Start: Kotor 3m
Altitude difference: 964m
Distance: 23km
May 2023

It goes up 20 kilometres with a constant approx. 5% gradient.

Unfortunately, today's weather is scary. The traffic in the small town of Kotor is just as scary.

But shortly after the end of the village, the road becomes much quieter.

Three flat bends follow...

...and at this point we turn left up the actual climb.

It rains incessantly...

Easy ascent

View down to the other side of the bay towards the Adriatic coast

And then, for the first time, there is an impressive view down to the fjord-like bay of Kotor. When the weather is fine, this must be a dream. It is reminiscent of the Geirangerfjord in Norway.

What follows are 16 narrow hairpin bends that nestle into the hillside.

The hairpin bends are numbered in ascending order.

Today, four cruise ships are moored at the bottom, each sending up to 2,000 passengers to the old town of Kotor (population 5,000). Montenegro, which is burgeoning with tourists, still puts up with this overtourism. Further north in Dubrovnik, Croatia, this form of tourism has already been limited.

Up here, however, it is quite lonely in this weather. Unfortunately, there is nothing to see of the sweeping spectacle.

Only after 20 kilometres of ascent does it flatten out a bit towards the end.

View back

And then the plateau with the turnoff to Lovćen is reached. It would have been nice, but the weather is too bad and it is already late afternoon. So we descend again in the constant rain...
